European Premiere of The Lord of The Rings Simphony, by Howard Shore by Pungolo, emilgollum and Smeagol

The concert was sublime, really. I adored the 'white voice' soloist, and Sissel (the female soloist). The Flanders Orchestra was really great, and that enormous choir too.

Many sketches projected on the screens (most of them were never seen sketches) by Alan Lee. I was pleased to see that the only color- paintings where John Howe's works!! Like Barad Dur with a Nazgul and Mt Doom, or Gandalf at Bag End...

Howard was really fantastic. There were many emotional moments, but the best one was..the end: an OVATION of almost 10 minutes, with Howard going out and coming back 3 times! Really an explosion of joy from 10,000 people in love with his music.

During the 30 minute break, in the middle of the concert, we went in the buffet room and had a chat with ROY TOLKIEN, our own Oxonian's nephew, who appeared in Return of the King too! We had an autograph, and did a little interview! There was the president of the Belgium Tolkien Society too, and some Belgium Tolkien Society members (who brought us there at the concert in Anversa from Brussels..). One of them had been John Rhys Davies's bodyguard during a comic- con!!!

Roy is a delightful person, he's elegant and cheerful, he explained that he spent 2 weeks in New Zealand during July ROTK pickups, and became a friend of David Wenham (Faramir). He said he visited Weta workshop and Weta digital and did the complete tour of three foot six studios, and then visited the south island and did some extreme sports!

He thinks the movies are good, and encourages people to read the books: he said he knows that books-selling augmented exponentially after the movie releases! We asked what did he think about fans, and he said that the answer of fans to the trilogy had been great, and that he hopes they'll make The Hobbit, but he doesn't know much about New Line's interest in the movie.. (but we know!)

He is a proud English Tolkien Society Member, and someone asked: "After the movies, it was supposed that GB Tolkien Society subscriptions would be increased a lot, but they didn't augment so much as expected. Why?" He anwered that they encreased indeed, not so much, but we have to think that in England Tolkien is really settled since many years.

I answered that instead we, in italy, raised from 200 subscribers, in 2000, to more than 1000 this year!!!

Finally, he left a video message to us for our meeting in Bologna next May, and we invited him to our italian 'oxonmoot': Hobbiton 11th, which is going to take place in San Daniele del Fiuli the first week of september!!

Out of the buffet hall I was interviewed by a local (i guess) television, and they asked why that evening I was there, and I said that it was because I love Shore, I love Tolkien, I love Peter Jackson, and so that have been one of my best evenings!!!

I wanted to say thanks to the Italian Tolkien Society for providing us that wonderful tickets...really fantastic!! Thanks!

There are many other photos of the event, here!
